Everyone loves to play the role of general manager. Fans around the globe embrace the job of Monday morning quarterback, armchair referee, assistant coach, and of course suggesting offseason moves for their favorite sports team.
So when I decided to feature some of my fellow Pacer fans’ trade ideas in my latest column what better message board to visit than RealGM’s own Pacer forum? I mean the site’s name is RealGM, as in General Manager. Or at least that’s what I think it means.
It can’t be General Motors because I think that’d be some kind of copyright infringement, and we don’t specialize in cars. I doubt it stands for General Mills because while most of us love cereal, we deal with sports. I’m fairly certain it’s not a tribute to Manu Ginobili since RealGM launched in 2000, when Manu wasn’t even in the NBA yet.
Anyway, here’s what a few of the most dedicated posters on RealGM’s pacer forum (I also asked the users on PacerDigest.com’s forum and the IndyStar message boards) said when I asked them for suggestions on offseason trades for their Indiana Pacers…
Bit’s and DeceptionHEAT suggested this trade between the Pacers and the Bucks:
Jamaal Magloire and Mo Williams for Stephen Jackson and Jeff Foster
I love that fact that Indiana get an upgrade at the center position with Jamaal Magloire, and a speedy scorer in Mo Williams, but I’m not keen on sending these two players to a Central Division rival. The Bucks are a rising team, and giving them Jax and “Feisty” Foster will make them even better. Magloire, a former All-Star, took a backseat to rookie Andrew Bogut last season and would love to play heavy minutes alongside Jermaine O’Neal. However, I think acquiring Williams will stockpile things even more at the point guard position for the Pacers. Of course, this deal would look a heck of a lot better if Indiana deals one or more of their four point guards before or after the trade.
MizzouPacers suggests this deal between the Pacers and Grizzles:
Eddie Jones and Damon Stoudamire for Jamaal Tinsley, Stephen Jackson, and Austin Croshere
This deal surprisingly works out financially because of the huge contract of Jones. I like how the Pacers are dealing Jackson and getting Jones to fill the shooting guard spot, which in my opinion is a nice upgrade. Jones contract also expires after next season, so the move would give the Pacers quite a bit of financial flexibility in the coming years. While Stoudamire is signed through 2009, it’s for a relatively low four million dollars. As in the Milwaukee deal they are taking on a point that they may not need, even though they’re dealing Tinsley. Also, it may look like the Pacers giving a lot to get not too much, but the financial savings makes it hard for the Pacers to pass on this deal.
ESutt12 would like this trade between Indiana and Dallas:
Marquis Daniels for Stephen Jackson
As a Pacer fan I love this trade. Indiana rids themselves of Jackson, who is rumored to have caused a little bit of locker room drama and to have ruined team chemistry, and gets a player on the rise in Daniels. However, I’m not so sure even Mark Cuban would pull the trigger on this deal. Dallas has done extremely well, possibly becoming the next NBA champion, and they may not want to tamper with their line-up. Talent-wise, this is probably the best trade suggestion so far.
PacersRule07 suggested that Indiana make this deal with Phoenix:
Kurt Thomas for Austin Croshere and the #45 pick
This is a trade that Phoenix would likely make if they are interested in re-signing either Boris Diaw or Leandrinho Barbosa in the summer of 2008. Acquiring Croshere’s contract, which expires at the end of next season, will allow the Suns to have cap room to re-sign or extend the contracts of the young stars. Indiana gets a lost-post threat in the deal to start alongside Jermaine O’Neal. The Pacers throw in the second round pick in order to entice Phoenix into the deal, but it probably wouldn’t play much of a factor in the long run.
Purdue101 from Pacers Digest would like to complete this trade with Houston:
Stromile Swift for Stephen Jackson
What I love about this deal is that the Pacers can a solid big man to share the center position with Jeff Foster, and start in the event that Foster has another injury-plagued season. Swift’s contract is one year shorter than Jackson, so in the event that things don’t work out at least they’ll receive cap relief a year sooner than they would have with Jackson. I would like this trade even better if Jackson was substituted with Tinsley, but as of the current CBA rules the trade would go through because of Tinsley’s BYC (base-year) contract. |
